Sumiko Hattori (Iwaasa) Obituary (1926

Obituary for Sumiko Hattori (Iwaasa) Sumi Hattori, age 90, peacefully passed away on Tuesday, January 10, 2017 in Provo, Utah. She was born to “Henry” Koichi Kojun Iwaasa and his wife Ito Yashima Iwaasa in Raymond, Alberta, Canada. Sumi and her family joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints while living in Raymond. Sumi learned the value of hard work as she worked her way through school. Eventually, she moved to Utah to attend the BYU Business College where she worked to get certified in the secretarial field. While on holiday to California with a friend, Sumi met Takash (Tak/Tyke) Hattori. He knew Sumi’s friend and owned a car, so he became the “designated driver” for their sight-seeing. After Sumi left California, Tak kept in touch with her and eventually drove up to Alberta to propose. They were married and settled in Southern California where Tak was starting a job with TRW and Sumi worked at Kaiser Permanente in Los Angeles. They moved to Torrance where they were closer to Tak’s work and were able to raise their two daughters, Karen Kiku and Melody Ann. Sumi worked for the Los Angeles School District as a secretary at Gardena Elementary. After she and Tak retired, they loved to travel everywhere, from seeing the shows in Branson, Missouri, to Vermont to see the fall colors, and even to China to walk on the Great Wall. After Tak passed away, Sumi liked to volunteer at the local hospital, Little Company of Mary, and later at Utah Valley Regional Medical Center in Provo. Sumi is preceded in death by her husband, Takash Hattori; her parents, Kojun and Ito; sisters Sachie Karaki and Yasuko Hironaka; and brothers, Toru Iwaasa, Henry Nolan Iwaasa, and Jeaune Iwaasa. She is survived by a brother, Raymond (Susan); and sisters, Kuni Ryning and Hanae Robbs, both of Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada; her two daughters, Karen (Roy) Dickson and Melody (Mike) Barrett; five Dickson grandchildren, David Takashi (Jessica), Shayla Sumiko, Lisa Mariko, Scott Kiyoshi, and Cheryl Yasuko; and one great grandson, Bradley Scott Dickson. Per Sumi’s wishes, there will not be a funeral service. Her remains are to be cremated and interred with her husband at Green Hills Memorial Park in Rancho Palos Verdes, California.
