Obituary for
Maxine Constable (Tyler)

Maxine Tyler Constable, 98, passed away October 19, 2018, less than a month before her 99th birthday, in Provo, Utah. She was born in Prosser, Washington, November 14, 1919, the seventh of twelve children of Walter Ellsworth Tyler and Minnie Frances Roylance. Minnie was born and raised in Springville, Utah, a descendent of early LDS settlers; her grandmother’s family had come from England in 1856 and joined the Martin Handcart Company to unite with the Saints in Utah.

During the Great Depression, the Tylers moved to Napa, California. Maxine graduated from Napa High School in 1937, the year the Golden Gate Bridge opened. She attended secretarial school, and while working as a bookkeeper at the Veteran’s Home in Napa Valley married Harold Richard Constable in 1940. They made their home in Napa and raised three daughters. They took many family vacations to various national parks and also enjoyed several family reunions. They were very active in the LDS Church, including being Stake Missionaries. Maxine worked as a Relief Society president, taught a literature class, and began doing genealogy work in 1958. Family research became a lifelong joy for her.

Maxine retired from her medical records job at Napa State Hospital in 1970. She and Harold (also retired at age 50) moved to Arizona for five years. They enjoyed a lot of road trips. In Canada they visited the Butchart Gardens in Victoria, B. C.; Lake Louise, in Banff, Alberta; Montreal in Quebec; New Brunswick; and Nova Scotia. In the U.S: the Grand Canyon, Mesa Verde National Park at the “Four Corners”; St. George; Bryce Canyon; Mt. St. Helens; Niagara Falls; Washington, D. C.; and various Church historical sites and temples across the country.

While in Arizona, they bought a rustic 1920’s Sierra Mountain cabin from relatives for a summer home. It was located in a unique setting 20 miles west of South Lake Tahoe in the El Dorado National Forest. Hidden on the side of the mountain canyon overlooking a roaring American River and next to a creek side waterfall, it was a place of tranquility and spiritual renewal. The couple hosted friends and relatives there for many years.

They returned to California to live in Placerville for 18 years. During that time, they went on a full time mission to St. Louis, Missouri. In 1988 Maxine compiled heirloom photos, life stores, and other written documents of her family history, and self-published a hard-bound book, “Our Tyler Heritage” for family members.

Maxine and Harold eventually went full circle to resettle in Napa to be near daughter Carole and husband. When Carole’s husband passed away in 2006, all three moved to Provo to be near Carole’s two daughters and their families. She was predeceased by her husband of 68 years, Harold Richard Constable, in 2008 also in Provo, Utah.

Maxine is survived by one sister, Beverly Tyler Kern, age 93 and by her own daughters, Carole Clinton-Wheelock (husband Gilbert), Leslie Constable, Sara Joslin and four grandchildren, Mark (Ana Maria) Madrid, Marina (Tyler) Money, Caron (Greg) Bodily, and Gowan (Shahnaz) Joslin. She had 15 great grandchildren and 3 great, great grandchildren.

We’d like to thank the Provo Beehive Home for their loving care the past few years.

Funeral services were held Friday, October 26, 2018 at 3:00 p.m. at Nelson Family Mortuary, 4780 N. University Avenue, Provo, UT. There was also a viewing one hour prior to services.
