Matthew "Matt" Stephen Anthony, 34, passed away suddenly on September 4, 2025, in Salt Lake City, Utah, due to complications from a medical condition. Fittingly, he spent his final weekend close to heaven, climbing and canyoneering in Zion National Park. The final book he and his Dad were reading together was Jordan Peterson's "We Who Wrestle with God", which was bookmarked and on his nightstand.
His life was a testament to his adventurous spirit, infectious humor, and the love he had for everyone he encountered. Matt was a beacon of light, characterized by his relentless intellect and an insatiable desire to learn. His brilliant mind was not confined to the books alone; he carried it into every aspect of his life, making him a joy to be around. It was not hard to find Matt due to his wonderful, resounding laughter. Smart and loving, Matt’s life was an adventure that took him from Pennsylvania to Utah, with stops in New Mexico, New Hampshire, Vermont, Washington, Massachusetts, and Arizona along the way.
Matt was a man of many talents, but his passion lay in the great outdoors. He was a skilled mountaineer, a rock climber, and an enthusiastic downhill and backcountry skier. Canyoneering and ice climbing were also among his many pursuits. But his adventurous side was well balanced by his love for basketball, both by playing and watching. He was an avid fan of college basketball, with a particular fondness for Gonzaga. Matt’s adventurous spirit was matched only by his brilliant mind. He graduated from ASU with academic honors, earning two bachelor’s degrees. He attended USC in their Postbaccalaureate Premedical program before deciding to carve a different path. He began his career in drug development at Tolero Pharmaceuticals and later became the Director of Clinical Operations for Biolexis Therapeutics in Lehi, UT.
Yet, what mattered most to Matt was not his achievements, but his relationships. He was a man defined by love. To love others well and to be loved was his heartfelt desire. This love was evident in his recent service at a Catholic Sunday School in Boston, MA. Previously, he worked for Strive in the Watts section of Los Angeles while at USC, teaching underprivileged children. Those kids ultimately named his cats in a contest, so that is how he ended up with Nothing and Something. For as it is written, "Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins" (1 Peter 4:8). Matthew appropriately means "Gift of God".
Matt was a devoted son, grandson, nephew, and friend. He is survived by his father, Stephen Anthony, his mother, Sheryl Vandouris, his siblings Kate and Lauren Anthony, as well as his paternal grandmother, Maureen Anthony. He leaves behind many aunts, uncles, and cousins. His funeral service will be held on Friday, September 19, 2025, at 3:00 pm MDT, at 7375 Silver Creek Road, Park City, Utah, 84098. A graveside service will follow at 4:30 pm MDT at the Heber City Cemetery, 680 North 550 East, Heber City, Utah, 84032.
