Charles Lyndon Barney, known to family and friends as “Lynn,” passed away peacefully at the age of 81 on November 1, 2024, in Provo, Utah, following a courageous battle with cancer. Born on July 25, 1943, in Mount Pleasant, Utah, Lynn was the beloved son of Lamar and Inder Barney.
Lynn spent his early years in Spring City, Utah, before his family moved to Bingham Canyon. At the age of nine, they settled in Oakley, where his father worked on a ranch. Later, the family moved to Provo, where Lynn attended Provo High School, graduating in 1961.
After high school, Lynn enlisted in the Army Reserve, serving honorably from 1961 to 1966. Upon his return from service, he began working at Hercules as a quality control technician. However, his passion for learning soon led him to enroll at Brigham Young University, where he balanced a full-time job with a full course load.
During this time, Lynn met the love of his life, Ranee Anderson, from Fountain Green, Utah. In a delightful twist of fate, they discovered that Ranee had grown up just across the street from Lynn’s family. Their love quickly blossomed, leading to their marriage on April 14, 1967, and beginning a beautiful journey together that spanned 58 years.
Lynn graduated from BYU on May 29, 1969, with a degree in Business Administration with an emphasis in accounting and economics. Although he was deeply attached to Utah, the scarce job market forced him to accept a position at Union Bank in Southern California, marking a challenging decision to leave the place he loved. While in California, Lynn and Ranee welcomed two beloved daughters into their lives: Marquelle, born in 1970, and Kerry, born in 1971. His daughters quickly became the center of Lynn’s world, filling his days with joy and purpose as he supported and guided them through each stage of their lives.
Despite his career success, Lynn missed Utah deeply. In 1972, they made the decision to return home, beginning a new chapter at Commercial Security Bank in Orem. Lynn worked in both Orem and Provo and threw himself into community involvement. He was active in the Utah Bankers Association, the Sertoma Club, and served as the chairman of the Orem United Way campaign. In 1977, he was Secretary of the Orem Rotary Club, became its President in 1979, and in 1981 was elected President of the Orem Chamber of Commerce. He was very passionate about the position he held at keybank.

Lynn is survived by his wife, Ranee, and their devoted family. His daughters Marquelle, along with her husband Todd, and Kerry, with her husband Bryan. Lynn was a cherished grandfather to Devyn and her husband Kyler, Bry and her fiance Briana, Josh and his girlfriend Bailey, and Jaxon and his girlfriend Lex. He was also blessed with two great-grandchildren, Jett and Axton, who brought him immense joy. Lynn’s memory will live on in the hearts of all who loved him.
Lynn was the heart of his family’s support system. Ask them how many hours he spent at dance competitions, school programs, and daddy daughter dates—he never missed a chance to cheer them on.
In his free time, Lynn embraced the outdoors and had a zest for life that shone through his many hobbies. He loved reading, hunting, golfing, fishing, camping, and dirt bike riding, and he never ran out of stories to tell. Whether it was about the birdie he scored on the golf course, the big buck he proudly brought down, or days out with his loyal dog, Casey Boy, he cherished every adventure.
Lynn also found joy in taking his Harley motorcycle out for long rides, hitting the open road in his red Corvette, and tackling off-road trails in his RZR. His travels took him across Europe with friends, where he explored new places and cultures with excitement. Spending winters in St. George and summers at the family cabin, creating memories with loved ones. He was a dedicated member of RiverSide Country Club, Lynn enjoyed many rounds on the golf course. One of his proudest moments was sharing his last victorious round with his beloved wife Ranee,
and grandsons Josh and Jaxon. Every moment, whether close to home or far away, was an opportunity for Lynn to create memories he treasured and shared with family and friends.
One memorable tale involved Casey boy tangling with a skunk. Despite hours of scrubbing with tomato juice, baking soda, and even perfumed shampoo, Lynn struggled to get Casey boy back to being even remotely presentable. But for Lynn, these experiences were all part of the joy he found in his life outdoors, and he shared them with pride and a sense of humor.
In his later years, Lynn and Ranee were blessed to share in countless joyful activities with their grandchildren. From attending dance recitals and basketball games to cheering at dirt bike races, Lynn was always there, often right in the front row. He even embraced dressing up as Santa Claus, bringing smiles to everyone around him. Lynn never missed a game or event, and he was every grandchild’s #1 supporter, leaving them with memories of his boundless love, enthusiasm, and unwavering pride.
Lynn was a true romantic, sending flowers to Ranee from the moment they met and continuing this loving gesture throughout their life together. His presence touched many, and his life made a lasting impact. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him. His life was a “game changer”.
