Obituary for
Lily Croan Smith

Lily Croan Smith July 24, 1925 – September 21, 2015
Our beloved Mother, Grandmother, Great-Grandmother, and Great-Great-Grandmother passed on peacefully at her home in Provo, Utah.
Born on Daisy Hill Farm in Durham, England, Lily enjoyed a wonderful childhood with her father, William Croan, mother, Elizabeth and sister Mary. World War II brought change and hardship to her childhood. It was towards the end of the war that Lily met D. Lowry Smith, an American C-47 pilot, at a dance and they have been dancing ever since and now they are dancing together once again. They started a new life in America and she supported dad in the Air Force and in his medical education. They lived in Salt Lake City, Florida, Baltimore, Maryland and then put down some roots in California, where they set up Lowry’s medical practice and they finished raising their family.
A move to Provo represented another change in venue but didn’t change her life of service to others. She soon volunteered to work at the Missionary Training Center where she served for 20 years. She loved working with the missionaries. She also spent many years as president, officer and board member of many organizations including the California Utah Women’s Association, the Utah Medical Alliance, the Symphony Guild and Library Board. She used her organizational skill and energetic spirit to bring together wonderful friends to work with her for good causes that she held close to her heart. Of the philanthropic works, the Deseret Village in Spanish Fork, the Women’s Shelter and the Arts were particular passions of hers. She received the Civic Recognition Award for her many years of service in the non-profit community.
An unwavering love of family endeared her to all of us. Her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren all felt of her support. She was our number one cheerleader, fan and advisor to all the aspects of our lives; our families, careers, sports played and dances performed. Heaven will now benefit from her boundless energy, her limitless love and her work ethic. She is survived by daughter Sherry and sons Lester, Kevin, Colin, Steven and Daniel and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Those who passed before her include her husband Lowry, sister Mary and grandson Steven Daniel Milne.
During her short illness many served Lily and her family, including ward members, Bishop Snow, Summit Hospice and her tender and caring nurses Ninette and Kathy. Our family extends our thanks to all of them.
Service will be held at the Edgemont 14th ward building, 4200 N. Foothill Drive, Provo, UT 84604 on Monday, Sept. 28th. Viewing from 9:00 – 10:30 AM, service at 11:00.
