Obituary for \r\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t Karla Velda Holm (Ashby)\n\n\r\n\t\t\t\tKarla Ashby Holm, our loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother passed away on June 18, 2018 at the age of 83. She was born September 27, 1934 in Payson, Utah to Albert Sims Ashby and Susan Eliza Bates.\nShe attended school in Payson, graduating from Payson High School. She went to college, graduating with an Associate and Bachelors Degree from Brigham Young University. She received her MBA from the University of Phoenix. Her life as a student was very meaningful to her and she encouraged all family and friends to pursue a higher education.\nShe met Dean Holm while still in high school. They were married August 2, 1952 in Springfield, Tennessee. Their marriage was solemnized in 1968 in the Salt Lake City LDS Temple. The couple has three sons, Brad, Steve and Mike who they raised to maturity in Provo, Utah.\n She enjoyed a career in the business world, working 33 years for United States Steel Corporation. She was the first woman in management at the Geneva Plant and retired as the Personnel Manager of the Geneva-Pittsburg, California profit center. Her first retirement was short lived as she did adjunct faculty work at Brigham Young University, Utah Valley State College (currently Utah Valley University) and the University of Phoenix. After teaching and business consulting she was ready for a new challenge so she accepted the position of Director-Human Resources/Equity Officer at Utah Valley State College where she worked until retiring yet again. \nShe was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints where she served in a variety of positions. She especially enjoyed teaching and transcribing patriarchal blessings. She served in many church and community assignments. These included a service mission at the LDS Employment office, an ordinance worker at the Provo temple, board member and vice chairman for Intermountain Health Care's South Region, board member for Intermountain Health Care's Health Plans, Provo-Orem Chamber of Commerce, United Way and American Red Cross.\nHer interests were focused on her children and grandchildren. She loved following their lives. She had a good listening ear and was always there for them. She loved watching them grow, mature, pick themselves up from poor choices and especially enjoyed all of their successes. She also enjoyed her friends, neighbors and ward members. She was an avid reader and volunteered at the Orem Library.\nKarla is survived by her husband, Dean Holm; her three children, Bradley Dean (Barbara) Phoenix, Arizona; Stephen Kurt (Melanie) St. George, Utah; and Michael Paul (Rene), Midway, Utah as well as eleven grandchildren and twenty-one plus great-grandchildren.\nShe was preceded in death by her parents, Albert and Susan Ashby; her brothers and their wives, Gerald and Phyllis Ashby, Dean and Jane Ashby, LaMar and Gloria Ashby.\nIn leu of flowers please consider a donation to a charity of your choice.\nFuneral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. with a viewing prior from 10-10:45am at the Orem Suncrest LDS 6th Ward, 891 W 130 N, Orem on Thursday, June 28, 2018. An evening viewing will be held on Wednesday, June 27, 2018 from 6-8:00pm at Nelson Family Mortuary, 4780 N. University Avenue, Provo. Interment will be at the Orem City Cemetery.
