G. Richard Mantlo, known to family and friends as Dick, passed away from heart failure on September 29, 2026, at the age of 94. He was born on July 30, 1932, in Bear River, Utah, to Wallace and Rachel Mantlo. In grade school, he and his family moved to Brigham City, Utah. It was there that years later Dick met the love of his life, Eleanor Judith “Judy” Call, at Box Elder High School. They married in 1954.
Dick served in the United States Navy as a lieutenant commander and was a Vietnam veteran. After retiring from the military, he put himself through law school and became an attorney, admitted to practice before the New Mexico Supreme Court, the United States Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit, and the United States Supreme Court. He lived in many places during and after his military service, including Utah, Georgia, Vietnam, Morocco, and New Mexico.
Dick was a devoted member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He served as a Branch President, Bishop, and member of the Stake Presidency. He and his first wife, Judy, served a mission at the Church History Museum in Salt Lake City. He enjoyed golf, scuba diving, and volunteering at Wasatch Mountain State Park.
Above all, Dick cherished his family. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Eleanor Judith "Judy" Call; and his siblings, Ione, DeVerl, Bert, and Beth. He is survived by his wife, Diane Nelson; his children, Gina Mantlo, Nathan (Bronwen) Mantlo, Kenneth (Betty) Mantlo, and Amanda (Thomas) Wright; and fifteen grandchildren and fourteen great-grandchildren.
