Our beloved mother, grandmother, and great grandmother, Emily McDonald Burningham, passed away of natural causes, the afternoon of October 5, 2022, at the age of 92.
Emily was born March 25, 1930, in Salt Lake City, Utah, to Stevenson McDonald and Elizabeth Eldredge Andrus McDonald. She grew up in Holladay, Utah where she had Mt. Olympus as a backyard playground. She and her siblings spent many hours climbing Devil’s rock and playing in the canal. Emily was blessed to grow up surrounded by a wonderful, loving extended family. She worked hard, played often, and loved life. Emily met and fell in love with George Leland Burningham, also from Holladay. They were sealed for time and all eternity in the Salt Lake Temple on June 21, 1950 – the “longest and sweetest day of the year."
Emily was an active member in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and had many opportunities to serve. Her favorite was serving numerous missions with her eternal sweetheart. They served proselyting missions together in the Tahiti, Papeete Mission, and the Zaire, Kinshasa Mission, where they were privileged to be the first missionaries in the Republic of the Congo, Brazzaville. They also served CES missions to Fiji and in Davis County, Utah. They later served in the Washington D.C. temple.
Emily loved to travel with her sweetheart and family. She loved to have the family close to visit and play games. She loved Scrabble, Rook, Hand and Foot or whatever others were willing to play.
Emily is survived by her children, Lee (Colleen) Burningham, Bruce (Kim) Burningham, Marilyn (Kent) Critchlow, Janet (Steve) Rose, Brenda (Blaine) Fowler, Brent (Debbie) Burningham. She left a great posterity including 32 grandchildren, numerous great-grandchildren, and ever increasing great-great grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her loving husband, parents, daughter Barbara Burningham Izatt, and siblings Elizabeth McDonald Lambourne and Howard Andrus McDonald.
As a family, we thank the residents and staff of Treeo who were friendly and kind, and Dr. Jeffrey Call, whose attentive care helped her live such an active, long life.
A family viewing will be held Thursday October 13, from 10:00 to 11:00 am, at Russon Mortuary in Bountiful Utah. Internment will follow at 11:30 am at the Bountiful City Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints missionary, temple or humanitarian fund.
