Obituary for \r\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t Donald Archie Gurney\n\n\r\n\t\t\t\tDonald Archie Gurney, age 70, passed away at his home in Provo on\nMarch 7, 2016. He was born July 6, 1945, in Brigham City, Utah, the\nfirst child of Archie William Gurney and Viola June Skaggs. He married\nKathleen J. Keeler on January 23, 1970, and later divorced. He married\nKaren Hutchison in the Provo Temple on July 14, 1989.\n\nHe graduated from BYU with a bachelor’s degree in accounting. Don was\na well-respected real estate appraiser for over 40 years, and he\nhelped mentor many others in this profession. He served in multiple\nprofessional leadership capacities.\n\nDon had a strong love of the gospel of Jesus Christ. He loved his\nfull-time LDS mission to Uruguay, as well as a church service mission\nthat he later served with his wife Karen in south Provo. He served\nwell in numerous church positions, including hometeacher, high\ncouncilor, bishopric counselor, stake/ward executive secretary, and\nmost recently in a branch presidency in the MTC (which was quite\npossibly his favorite assignment of all). He has now been called out\nof the MTC to start a new mission.\n\nDon was beloved by his wife and family because of his kindhearted,\nselfless, and gentle demeanor. As Grandpa Don, he spent countless\nhours babysitting, and he was always interested in the lives of his\nchildren and grandchildren. Don also loved golfing, writing clever\npoetry, and organizing family ping pong tournaments. He was incredibly\ngenerous and giving, and always wanted everyone to feel included.\n\nHe is survived by his wife, Karen, brother Howard (Janet) Gurney,\nsister Carolyn (Marvin) Coy, brother-in-law Robert (MaryLou) Hughes,\nsons Jason (Erin) Gurney, Todd (Kerry) Gurney, Tyler (Jennifer)\nGurney, Jordan (Andrea) Gurney, stepsons William (Jennifer) Maxwell,\nand Thomas (Laura) Maxwell, stepdaughters Jane (Gary) Slavens, Jill\n(Steven) Farnsworth, Liz (Todd) Eaton, Lori (Daniel) Mitchell, 37\ngrandchildren, 19 great grandchildren, and extended family members.\nDon was preceded in death by his parents and his sister Betty.\n\nFuneral services will be held at 12:00 PM on Saturday, March 12, 2016,\nat the Rock Canyon Ward, 3050 N. Mojave Ln., Provo, Utah. A viewing\nwill be held from 6:00-8:00 PM on Friday, March 11, 2016, at Nelson\nFamily Mortuary, 4780 N. University Ave., Provo, and a second viewing\nwill be held from 10:00-11:30 AM at the church prior to the services\non Saturday. Interment will take place at Eastlawn Memorial Hills,\n4800 N. 650 E., Provo.
