Daniel Dorton

Daniel David Dorton, affectionately known as Dan, came into this world on May 21, 1967, in Provo, Utah as the first of what would be 8 children to Bonnie and Terry Dorton. He lived a life that was a testament to his character, full of humility, humor, intelligence, and thoughtfulness. His journey ended on June 1, 2025, in his home of Orem, Utah; He was 58 years old.

Dan was a proud Provo High graduate and served an LDS mission in the Independence, MO mission from 1986-1988. He married Wendy Ellen Porter on April 13, 2001, and they began their life together, eventually having Will join their family on November 22, 2007. This trio began a full and rich life together.

A software developer by trade, Dan found satisfaction in creating and problem-solving. He retired from Novell Inc. in 2014, but his passion for learning and tinkering never ceased. His hobbies were as diverse and multifaceted as he was. From photography to hiking, Dan also enjoyed camping, rock hounding, reading and engaging with Boy Scouts. He enjoyed a wide variety of hobbies and loved trying new things. He tried his hand at writing, building models, woodworking, and gardening, and was always on the path of learning. One of his proudest achievements was becoming an Eagle Scout, a recognition he was further honored for with the Second Miler Award from the Boy Scouts of America.

Dan's faith was an integral part of his life, serving faithfully as a teacher, executive secretary, and Scout Master. His deep-rooted faith was seen in his love for his family, his wife Wendy Dorton, his son Will Dorton, his father Ronald Dorton, and his mother Bonnie Dorton. Above all else, what mattered most to Dan were his family, faith, learning, nature, and humor. He was a man who loved to laugh and make others laugh, and his memory will continue to bring smiles to those who knew him.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, June 5, 2025, at 6:00pm MDT at Nelson Family Mortuary (located at 4780 N. University Ave. in Provo), and on Friday, June 6, 2025, at 10:00am MDT at Geneva Heights 5th Ward, located at 546 North 500 West in Orem, UT. The funeral service will be held on Friday, June 6, 2025, at 11:00am MDT at Geneva Heights 5th Ward, followed by interment at Lehi City Cemetery at 12:45pm MDT.
