Barbara Joyce (Carter) Sandstrom
Barbara Joyce (Carter) Sandstrom, age 93, of Provo, UT, passed away peacefully on Friday, September 11, 2026, surrounded by family.
Barbara was born on October 8, 1932, in Provo, UT, to George Clark Carter and Nina Park. She grew up on the Carter family farm on Grandview Hill in Provo.
On November 17, 1952, Barbara married prominent Utah architect Lewis Eric Sandstrom, Jr. in the Salt Lake Temple for time and all eternity. Together they shared nearly 60 years of marriage before Eric passed away in May of 2012. The life they built centered around family, faith, and community service.
Throughout her life, Barbara worked tirelessly to serve her community, church, and family. She is well-regarded in the community having served eight years on the Provo City Council, where she helped shape the direction of the city for the quality of life it is known for today.
Barbara found great joy in many things. She loved books and was an avid reader and researcher her entire life. This love for research assisted her greatly in compiling the family genealogical history before the modern digital age. She was an explorer who preferred to hike instead of a car ride, and camp in a tent over a hotel room. She loved cross-country skiing, mountain biking, backpacking, and always being present with her family.
She will be remembered for her strength, faith, devotion to family, humor, love of BYU sports, and most importantly for the positive impact she had on anyone who came in contact with her.
Barbara is survived by her daughter Sharla Washburn (Merrill) of Provo, UT, daughter Jill Sorensen (Greg McEwan) of Provo, UT, son Nord Sandstrom (Rebeca Aristizabal) of Denver, CO, and grandchildren: Monica, Britta, Jessica, Tessa, Jake, Afton, Jesse, Reagan, and Haydn as well as 19 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband Lewis Eric Sandstrom, Jr., daughter Jody Sandstrom, son Stephen Sandstrom, granddaughter Erica Sorensen, and three brothers (Jack, Gary, and Melvin).
A viewing and visitation will be held on Saturday, September 19, 2026, at 10:00 am MDT, at Nelson Family Mortuary, located at 4780 N University Ave, Provo, UT. Burial will follow at Provo Cemetery.
Flowers may be sent to: Nelson Family Mortuary - 4780 N University Ave, Provo, UT.
The family wishes to thank the staff at Intermountain Health Utah Valley Hospital for their exceptional care, her friends, and the staff at Cove Point Retirement for their kindness and friendship over the past several years.
Barbara brought joy and happiness to her family. She will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who knew her. We love you forever and ever and ever!
“My life has been dedicated to helping my deceased ancestors. Service in the church and in the community. Developing good family relationships. Loving and trusting in the Lord to guide me and answer my prayers.”
