With heavy and humble hearts, we honor the life of A. Samuel Roberts, affectionately known as Sam to his family and friends. Born on November 12, 1941, in Murray, Utah, to Arthur Sr. and Rebecca Bastian Roberts, Sam was a beacon of light in the lives of all who knew him. He passed away peacefully on September 10, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of love, service, and dedication. His life was a testament to one of his favorite passages from the Book of Mormon: "When ye are in the service of your fellow beings ye are only in the service of your God" (Mosiah 2:17).
Sam had a quick wit and was a loving, creative, and dedicated man. He spent his career as an educator in the Provo City School District where he was admired and respected by colleagues, parents, and students. His creativity found another outlet in his love for painting; he spent countless hours perfecting his craft by painting portraits and natural landscapes. His paintings adorn the walls of many friends and family. Sam also loved documenting his personal history and countless Roberts family get-togethers. He found a lot of joy in taking pictures and videos of his loved ones.
As a lifelong member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Sam served with distinction in various bishoprics and high councils. Throughout his life, he went on four full-time missions, three of which he completed alongside his beloved wife, Terry. Sam served a mission as a young Elder in the Netherlands mission. Sam and Terry loved sharing their testimonies of the restored gospel in the countries of Serbia/Turkey, Hungary, and on the Navajo Reservation in the American Southwest. His love for the outdoors and his dedication to leading young men's activities resulted in many memorable camping trips and hiking adventures. To this day, family and friends share funny stories about adventures with Sam in the Uintah Mountains and deserts of Utah.
Sam is survived by his spouse, Terry, as well as his children Burton (and his wife Sharon) Roberts, Gregory (and his wife Melisa) Roberts, Amylyn (and her husband Michael) Baird, and his son Adam (and his wife Kenya) Roberts. Sam is also survived by his daughter-in-law, Wendy, and his 21 cherished grandchildren and soon to be 10 great grandchildren. He is also survived by his sisters Shawna (and her husband Doug) Powelson, Sherry (and her husband Ken) Carter, and his brother Scott (and his wife Marilyn) Roberts and his brother-in-law Rick (and his wife Jan) Stevens. Sam was preceded in death by his parents, Arthur Samuel Sr. and Rebecca Bastian Roberts, his son, Michael (married to Wendy) Roberts, and his in-laws, Burton and Katie Stevens.
Sam will be remembered as a man who loved his family deeply and devoted his life to serving others. Although a very dedicated family man, Sam found a lot of solace in privacy. There wasn't a holiday where Sam and Terry weren't the first to arrive, and Sam would always be the first to want to leave. He took peace in the privacy of his office.
Sam’s love for the Savior, Jesus Christ, and His gospel was the strength that carried him through life's many storms. Losing his father when Sam was only 16, and losing his son, Mike, four years ago are just a couple of the storms Sam valiantly endured. We find a lot of peace in knowing of the glorious reunion that took place when Sam was welcomed by his family. Sam's legacy of faith and devotion will continue to inspire those who knew him.
As painful as it was to so unexpectedly lose Sam to the other side of the veil, we have an unwavering faith that we will one day be part of that glorious reunion with Sam and all our other loved ones.
A visitation service will be held on Thursday, September 24, 2026, at 6:00pm MDT at the Nelson Family Mortuary, 4780 North University Avenue, Provo, Utah, 84604. A small family graveside service will be held on Friday, September 25, 2026, at 10:00am MDT at the Provo City Cemetery, 610 South State Street, Provo, Utah, 84606.
