Allene Eleanor Johnson West
October 17, 1934 – December 24, 2024
With hearts full of love and gratitude, we celebrate the remarkable life of Allene Eleanor Johnson West, who departed this earthly journey on December 24, 2024, leaving behind a legacy of faith, kindness, and unwavering devotion to her family and heritage.
Born on October 17, 1934, in Los Angeles, California, to Emil and Lisa Johnson, Allene was the youngest of four children: Helen, Helmer, Afton, and Allene. She cherished her Swedish roots, a proud legacy from her immigrant parents. Even in her final days, she warmly expressed her gratitude to those who visited and served her, with the phrase “Tack så mycket” (thank you very much), a testament to her gracious spirit.
Allene’s childhood in Los Angeles was filled with simple joys: shared moments with her family of six and her beloved grandmother in their cozy two-bedroom home, adventures with friends, trips to the movies and beach, and indulging in her favorite treats like hamburgers, fries, and chocolate. Her sweet tooth was legendary, and her penchant for serving dessert—even at breakfast—brought smiles to all.
After high school, Allene attended BYU, where her vibrant personality and adventurous spirit flourished. Her college years were marked by memorable moments, including the infamous whitewashing of the Y, which left a permanent mark—both on her leg and in her stories. It was during these years that a blind date changed her life forever, introducing her to the love of her life, Roger Dee West. They were married on June 1, 1956, in the LDS Los Angeles Temple, where Allene proudly became the first June bride after its dedication—a memory that has since been shared in the temple’s visitor center.
Together, Allene and Roger built a beautiful life filled with love and adventure. They were blessed with four children—Jeffrey Dee, Cynthia Ann, Kimberly Lisa, and David Benjamin—and lived in various places, including Hawaii, California - San Diego, Sun Valley, Van Nuys, Novato, Yorba Linda, and Utah – Orem.
Allene embraced life enthusiastically, always ready for a road trip, a camping adventure, or a visit to Disneyland. She cherished family gatherings, especially summers at Lake Tahoe, where her legendary “Treasure Box” delighted her grandchildren. Her travels extended to New Orleans, England, and France, where she collected memories that she treasured dearly.
A devoted member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, Allene lived her faith with conviction. She served faithfully in ward and stake callings, especially in Primary and at Girl’s Camp, and her heartfelt testimony was a source of inspiration for her family.
Her home was a reflection of her love and care—a warm, organized haven where family meals were shared three times a day. Even in her later years at Jamestown, her tidy apartment and daily routines reflected her lifelong commitment to order and grace.
Allene’s strength and resilience were evident throughout her life. Though she faced the challenges of aging with quiet determination, she rarely complained, always responding with a simple “I’m fine,” even when discomfort lingered. Her enduring health was a blessing, and her perseverance was an inspiration to all who knew her.
Above all, Allene’s greatest joy was her family. She adored her 34 grandchildren and great-grandchildren, celebrating their milestones with handwritten cards and heartfelt notes, often adorned with a lovingly drawn heart around their names. Her thoughtful gestures reminded her loved ones that they were cherished beyond measure.
As we bid farewell to our beloved mother and grandma Allene, we are comforted by the thought of her joyous reunion with Roger and the loved ones who have gone before her. This holiday season, we honor her memory and imagine her resting in heavenly peace.
Our family wishes to thank the staff at The Courtyard at Jamestown and Ovation Hospice who patiently and lovingly cared for her over her final period of her life.
